My Puppy Cries When I Leave Them: What Should I Do?

It’s common for young puppies to cry when left alone initially, as they may feel scared and miss their mother and littermates.

  • To help your puppy settle, provide a cozy bed, such as a crate that mimics a den. Including a cuddly toy or blanket with your scent can offer comfort. Consider using Adaptil, a dog-appeasing pheromone, to ease their transition. Blocking outside noise with a white noise machine or fan can also be helpful.
  • Ensure your puppy has relieved itself before being left alone to prevent crying due to needing to go to the toilet. Providing an indoor pet loo or puppy pads can be useful if outdoor access isn’t readily available.
  • Avoid scolding your puppy for crying, as this can heighten their anxiety. Instead, wait until they’re quiet before giving attention to avoid inadvertently reinforcing the crying behavior.
